A fibers
Nerve fibers in the body that are thinly myelinated, which means they are covered with a fatty substance called myelin. Myelin covers nerves and helps them transmit messages fast. A fibers conduct impulses at a speed of 6 to 120 meters per second, which is fast, since a meter is approximately 39 inches (slightly more than 3 feet). A fibers are 1 to 22 micrometers (one millionth of a meter) in diameter, which means they are really, really, really small. A fibers are also known as a-delta fibers or a-d (the Greek letter "delta") fibers. The Greek letter "delta" corresponds to the letter "D" in the English alphabet. d is the lowercase version of delta. Compare a fibers to c fibers.
