Derealization
Imagine walking down the street and everything that once seemed ordinary just seems strange and bizarre. That's what experiencing derealization is like. Derealization is a psychological condition in which one's perception of the environment is altered in such a way that what once seemed normal is perceived as strange, unreal, bizarre, and lacking depth. Derealization usually occurs with depersonalization, and usually shares the quick onset, symptoms, and causes of that condition. Depersonalization is a psychological condition in which a person feels as if he/she has lost his/her personal identity in relation to family and peers.

Derealization may be caused by being too tired, poor brain functioning, or using drugs that cause hallucinations. Hallucinations are strong sensory perceptions that one has of an object or event while awake, when no such object or event exists. Derealization can also occur in schizophrenia, a type of mental disorder in which one loses contact with reality.
