Extremity has the following meanings in the field of medicine:

1. One of the ends of a long or pointed structure. It is the farthest part, section, or point, and is something that is out of the way.

3. A hand or a foot.

2. An arm or a leg.

The leg may be identified as the lower extremity and the arm may be identified as the upper extremity. This means that the right arm would be known as the right upper extremity (abbreviated as RUE) and that the left leg would be known as the left lower extremity (abbreviated as LLE). Some doctors believe that the word extremity should only refer to the first meaning mentioned above and should not be used to refer to an arm or a leg, or a hand or a foot. Extremity is also known as extremitas. Extremity comes from the Latin word "extremus" meaning "last or outermost."
