Fibula
The smaller (in diameter) and lateral (meaning to the side) of the two lower leg bones. The fibula is the most slender of the long bones of the body. The weight of the body does not come to bear on the fibula. The fibula joins with the tibia on the top and bottom and with the main foot bone below (known as the talus). It contains three borders and three surfaces for attaching various muscles including the peroneus brevus, the peroneus longus, and the soleus longus. The peroneus longus is the shorter of the two lateral muscles of the leg, lying under the peroneus longus, which is the leg muscle located more superficially. The soleus longus is one of the back leg muscles. The fibula, along with the other lower leg bone (the tibia) is pictured below.
The fibula is also known as the calf bone, perone, and peroneal bone. Fibula comes from the Latin word "figo" meaning "to fix, fasten."
