GABA is a shorter way to say gamma-aminobutyric acid, a chemical messenger in the brain, spinal cord, heart, lungs, and kidneys, which sends messages telling the body to slow down. This is why GABA is known as an inhibitory (slowing down) neurotransmitter (chemical messenger).
