Gastrocolitis means inflammation of the stomach and the colon. The colon is the major part of the large intestine. The intestine is a tube shaped structure that is part of the digestive tract. It is divided into the small and large intestine. Gastrocolitis comes from the Greek word "gaster" meaning "a belly," the Greek word "kolikos" meaning "relating to the colon," and the Greek word "itis," meaning "inflammation." Put the words together and you have "inflammation relating to the colon (and) a belly."
