Gastroesophageal means relating to both the stomach and the esophagus. The esophagus is the tube in the body that food goes down to enter the stomach. Gastroesophageal comes from the Greek word "gaster" meaning "a belly," and the Greek word "oisophagus," meaning "gullet." The gullet means the throat. Put the words together and you have "a belly and gullet (throat)."
