Gastrosplenic means pertaining to the stomach and the spleen. The spleen is an organ next to the stomach that helps fight infection and removes and destroys worn-out red blood cells. Red blood cells are cells that help carry oxygen in the blood. Gastrosplenic is also known as gastrolienal. Gastrosplenic comes from the Greek word “gaster” meaning “the belly,” the Greek word “splen” meaning “spleen,” and the Greek word “ikos” meaning “pertaining to.” Put the words together and you have “pertaining to the belly (and) spleen.”
