FEATURED BOOK ON MICROORGANISM FROM BARNES & NOBLE.COM:

Microbe Hunters: with a new introduction by F. Gonzalez-Crussi

A halophil is a microorganism whose growth increases or is dependent on a high amount of salt. A microorganism is a tiny organism made of one cell that is usually too small to be seen without using a microscope (a device that makes things appear larger). A cell is the smallest, most basic unit of life, that is capable of existing by itself. A halophil is also known as a halophile. Halophil comes from the Greek word "hals" meaning "salt," and the Greek word "philos" meaning "fond." Put the two words together and you get "fond (of) salt."
