Heterochronous means relating to heterochronia. Heterochronia is the origin or development of organs or tissues at an unusual time or out of the normal sequence. Heterochronous is also known as heterochronic. Heterochronous comes from the Greek word "heteros" meaning "other," the Greek word "chronous" meaning "time," and the Latin word "osus" meaning "full of." Put the words together and you get "full of other time."
