Jaw
Either of two bone structures that form the framework of the mouth and hold the teeth in position. Jaw movement is crucial to chewing, biting, and speaking. There is an upper and lower jaw. When most people use the term “jaw” they are referring to the lower jaw, which is the only movable bone in the face. The lower jaw is known as the mandible. The upper jaw is known as the maxilla, and it extends all the way up to the eye sockets. The joint that connects the upper and lower jaw is known as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). A joint is a place where two bones contact each other.
