Kaluretic means relating to, causing, or characterized by kaluresis . Kaluresis is an increased excretion of the metallic element, potassium, in the urine (pee). To excrete means to release from the body as waste. It is not good if too much potassium is released from the body because potassium is necessary to live. It plays an important role in helping adjust the amount of water in the body, move muscles, and conduct nerve impulses. Kaluretic comes from the Latin word "kalium" meaning "potassium," the Greek word "ouresis" meaning "urination," and the Greek word "ikos" meaning "pertaining to." Put the three words together and you have "pertaining to potassium (in the) urine."
