Ma Huang
An herb that is added to one’s diet to increase energy. Ma Huang is the Chinese name for the plant, Ephedra equisitena. The name, Ma Huang, is often used because the plant is naturally found in China. Ma Huang is also natural to India. Ma Huang contains about 0.75 to 1% ephedrine. Ephedrine is a drug that stimulates the brain and spinal cord. Ephedrine will increase blood pressure and heart rate while causing the bronchial muscles to relax. Bronchial refers to bronchus, which is a type of small airway connected to the lungs.

Ephedrine is a very powerful stimulant. In fact, it is about 10 times stronger than amphetamines, a popular group of stimulant medications. Many companies also sell Ma Huang as a weight loss aid. It is important to note that Ma Huang has been banned in several states and is thought to have caused several deaths.
