Nafarelin acetate
A drug that promotes the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). GnRH is normally released from the hypothalamus (a structure in the lower part of the brain) and stimulates the body to produce estrogen. Nafarelin acetate is used to treat endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus is found outside the uterus. This tissue is known as the endometrium. The uterus is a hollow organ in a female's body where the egg is implanted and the baby develops.

The massive increase of GnRH caused by nafarelin acetate overwhelms the body and causes the ovaries to shut down estrogen production. This helps treat endometriosis because there is evidence that estrogen promotes this disease. Estrogen is a type of hormone that promotes the growth of some physical female sexual characteristics.

Nafarelin acetate is also used to treat premature puberty in boys and girls since it decreases the amount of estrogen (and testosterone) in the blood. Puberty is the period of life in which the ability to reproduce begins, which usually begins between the ages of 11 and 13. Testosterone is a type of hormone that promotes the growth of some physical male sexual characteristics.

Nafarelin acetate is sprayed into one nostril in the morning and the other nostril at night. It is only available as a nasal spray. Nafarelin acetate is also known as Synarel.
