FEATURED BOOKS ON CANCER FROM BARNES & NOBLE.COM:
Oncology has the following meanings in the field of medicine:
1. The study of the physical, biological, and chemical qualities and features of tumors (tissues that grow more rapidly than normal), such as their causes, development, and treatment. Tumors are abnormal tissues. Tumors can be invasive, destructive, and spread to other areas of the body. These types of tumors are described as malignant. Many malignant tumors are known as cancer. Non-malignant tumors are described as benign (pronounced bee-nine).
2. The study of something that is malignant. Besides the above description of malignant, it can also mean resistant to treatment, severe, becoming worse over time, and frequently causing death. Oncology comes from the Greek word "onkos" meaning "swelling," and the Greek word "logos" meaning "the study of." Put the two words together and you have "study of swelling." The word swelling is used because it tumor often appears as a swelling
