Phytoalexin is an antibiotic produced by a plant in response to the entry of a disease-producing substance. An antibiotic is a substance that kills other organisms. Phytoalexin comes from the Greek word "phyton" meaning "a plant," and the Greek word "alexein" meaning "to defend." Put the words together and you get "to defend a plant."
