Premotor cortex
An area near the middle of the brain behind the motor cortex. The motor cortex is an area in the middle of the brain that is important for movement in various areas of the body. Damage to the premotor cortex can cause spasticity (abnormal muscle movements), increased deep tendon reflexes (a shortening of a stretched muscle that is caused by a sharp tap), and motor apraxia (impaired performance of voluntary movements). The premotor cortex is also known as the agranular cortex of Brodmann's area 6. Brodman's areas are 47 different brain regions located on a map of the brain created by the German anatomist, Korbinian Brodman. The premotor cortex is also known as the premotor area. The premotor cortex is so-named because it is located before the motor cortex. The prefix "pre" comes from the Latin word "prae," meaning "before."
