Psychiatry
There are many different types of psychiatry, such as social psychiatry (the study of social causes of mental disorders), community psychiatry (care of the mentally ill outside of a hospital setting), forensic psychiatry (dealing with legal issues, such as competency of a murderer with a mental illness to stand trial), and neuropsychiatry (studying the relationship between brain disorders and mental symptoms).
Someone who has the skills and a state license to practice psychiatry is known as a psychiatrist. Psychiatry is also known as psychiatrics. Compare psychiatry with psychology, a more general type of science that deals with the study of mind and behavior. Psychiatry comes from the Greek word "psyche" meaning "mind" and the Greek word "iatreia" meaning "medical specialty." Put the two words together and you have "medical specialty (of the) mind."
The study of the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the mind, emotions, and behavior. Psychiatry especially deals with disorders of this type that are caused by factors within the body or from faulty interpersonal relationships with others. Psychiatry deals with biological, social, and psychological causes of mental disorders.
