Ramification has the following meanings in the field of medicine:

1. The act or process of dividing or distributing outwards into a branch-like pattern.

2. A branch or something that splits off from the main part of something. Ramification comes from the Latin word "ramus" meaning "branch," and the Latin word "facio" meaning "to make." Put the two words together and you have "to make (a) branch."
