Rarefy means to become light or less dense. Dense means to be crowded together. When something becomes light or less dense, there is less of it and sometimes not much of it. Rarefy comes from the Latin word "rarus" meaning "rare," and the Latin word "facere" meaning "to make." Put the words together and you have "to make rare." The reason the word "rare" is used is because when something is rare, there is not much of it.
