Sign
1. Clear evidence of disease that can be measured or seen, such as a fever or a rash. Signs can be observed when examining patients and are often interpreted by doctors and nurses. Compare this definition of sign to a symptom, an indication of a disease that is reported by the patient but is not observed by others (unlike a sign), such as an itching sensation. Signs can occur together with symptoms. Syndromes are a group of signs and symptoms that occur together and have a common cause, representing a certain disease or inherited (passed on from the parents biological makeup) abnormality.

2. One of many movements of the body or arms and legs that are used to express something and represent a language.

3. In psychology, something that represents a specific idea to the person who perceives it.

4. A symbol or abbreviation. Sign comes from the Latin word “signum” meaning “mark.”
